Private Peaceful...from book to movie - Mr T

Good morning boys.  Now that we have completed reading and watching Private Peaceful, what are your thoughts on the way that the story was adapted for the big screen?  Did you think the movie added value to the Private Peaceful experience?  What do you think are the main constraints that movie directors/producers have to consider when adapting a book to a movie?  Which character really nailed it for you in the film and why?  Which scenes were added (not part of the book)  by using a bit of 'poetic licence' to enhance the story?  Which was the most crucial scene 'cut' from the movie version?  How do you rate the book and movie overall?  If you were asked to make a Stop/Motion scene from Private Peaceful which scene would you most likely choose?
