I've noticed them throughout my life, and I sure know how annoying they are when the song in your head is not wanted. I think they work by, once you hear a song and it just gets to the point that your head remembers it and acts as if it is playing all the time. They are hard to stop due to the repetitive tune of the song probably the most annoying tune I know of is the beep test music - bringing back bad memories.
I still have trouble knowing how I can hear tunes in my head as if someone is speaking, yet I can't actually hear the voice itself, which is very strange. The point is that they mostly shouldn't be around, only being helpful at certain places with certain songs.
