Earworms Harry

It is quite amazing how we can remember the lyrics to loads of songs and even when you haven't heard the song for ages when it's played you manage to sing a long with it. Some earworms can be good except when they stay in your head for ages and I have a three year old cousin who is the biggest wiggles fan and I always get wiggles songs stuck in my head.

Earworms Nicholas (the apple rabbit)

Earworms are so annoying. I have a few, my worst one is Primadonna  another is live while were young. by one direction I do not like these songs because they get into my head and the singer's voice/s don't suit my liking. But sometimes earworms are great. They play back my favourite songs (usually when I'm running).

By Nicholas

Matthew's Earworms

Earworms can really bug me sometimes, and it's so fustrating when you're trying to achieve a relatively simple task like hanging the washing out and all of a sudden this tune rings through, sometimes from over a couple of years ago and there it sounds, crystal clear. It must be a really complicated branch of science to study, all about subconscious thinking and memories. I'm really perplexed how a song is hidden deep within an area of the brain without you noticing and suddenly the song blurts out. It takes some thought to get rid of them because the moment you attempt to push it out you are subconsciously thinking about the song and therefore it comes back. It's like a never-ending circuit-you think about the song, you try to get rid of it, you think about getting rid of it and how you are going to, and then as you are thinking about getting rid of it it stays there. I find that One republic's Apologize and Good life are so hard to get away. It's probably something to do with how a songs simple rhythm follows or how repetitive the tune is.

Earworms - Louis

I've noticed them throughout my life, and I sure know how annoying they are when the song in your head is not wanted. I think they work by, once you hear a song and it just gets to the point that your head remembers it and acts as if it is playing all the time. They are hard to stop due to the repetitive tune of the song probably the most annoying tune I know of is the beep test music - bringing back bad memories.

I still have trouble knowing how I can hear tunes in my head as if someone is speaking, yet I can't actually hear the voice itself, which is very strange. The point is that they mostly shouldn't be around, only being helpful at certain places with certain songs.

~The Legendary Pony

Ear Worms Callum

I am usually against ear worms and hate them but sometimes I find them helpful as music seems to change my attitude, and when I am feeling angry or annoyed I sometimes listen to music to calm down.
The songs I find the most earworm-y are Soul Sister or Paradise.

Earworms George

Earworms are sometimes really annoying when you don't even like the song. If it is a good song though it is very helpful if you don't have an ipod like me. Seeing as I don't have an ipod  I don't get them much but some songs are nice to have like Troublemaker by Olly Murs and Changes by David Bowie.

Earworms (Theo)

Earworms can be very annoying, I usually find myself humming a song that I hear often and don't even like. I also think they can be very useful like singing an earworm that is useful like instructions or maybe just a song that you like.

Earworms ET.

Everyone hates it when they get earworms. They're not that easy to get rid of, even though each 'epesode' or 'spasem' only lasts say... 10 minutes or so. i have acctually tried reading and solving puzzles and it does work. Even though I don't like them I find it amazing that our brains are able to do that sort of thing.

By Edward Twomey

Earworms Henry B-W

One of the most often earworm for me is Dancing in The Moon Light by King Harvest and the lunch time song by Edward. I absolutely despise this song and would give anything to get it out of my head. The article has given me some ideas and I think I will try the anagrams and sudoku.

Earworms Ben

When I'm lying in bed trying to get to sleep I can sometimes choose whatever song I like from my "personal jukebox" even if it was a brand new song that was released the day before. A cool thing is that when I'm choosing my songs my eyes are wide open but what I see is a playlist of all the songs I have ever heard. From past experience I think that the slower songs stick to your head more because it is longer so it lingers on and on and on.

Listening to music inside your head is just like thinking thoughts but with audio not visual. All your doing is imagining something that has already been invented because to your brain your just piggybacking on your friends (the person that you heard the song from first) idea of a song.

Earworms Campbell

I normaly hate earworms.  If find that you sometimes get so annoyed that you end up sracthing your head trying to get it out of your mind.  Sometimes you end up singing a certain line over and over again and sometimes that line is wrong.

Earworms Noah

I HATE EAR WORMS! When I'm concentrating really hard and then this random song pops into my head. IT'S REALLY ANNOYING and there always really bad songs. I have about ten different earworms in my head at the moment. Mr. Tait shouldn't have said any thing about them, cause he brought them back into my head. I'm not quite sure that playing sudoku will work cause they will keep popping up in my head when I'm stuck on a line. These songs are stuck in my head:

  • Call me maybe
  • Single ladies
  • Bad romance
  • Thrift shop

Ear Worms Callum

I find that I don't always get earworms but when I get them they're usually songs I like but when they're not songs I like I can get rid of them and trade it for either another song or something else. For example Edward was singing "ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding" and for five seconds it was stuck in my head until I changed it to another song. Personally I think I specialize in giving people earworms like just before when I gave Thomas an earworm.

Earworms Marcus

Earworms are so annoying! I can transform ya is stuck in my head like anything! Please comment on your annoying songs. Novels don't make them go away by the way. I don't see why someone should be spotted to just casually be carrying an anagram book either. But, as I stated before, EARWORMS ARE SO ANNOYING! People are giving people earworms as I am writing this. For those doing that IT IS NOT FUNNY! People need to do more than make an article to make them go away.

Earworms Jesse

I personally find earworms kind of useful, for listening to music in my head, although there are times when they are extremely annoying. I think earworms would be an interesting Independent Study topic, as I find it quite interesting about how hard they are to stop. Some of the earworms I've had include Battle Scars by Guy Sebastian and Hall of Fame by The Script. With both of those songs, I found playing it on the piano 200 times over made me get bored of it and it left. But my family found that quite annoying.

Earworms Jin

I find earworms quite cool. It is amazing that we can just pick those different songs. I find I get them most when running. I unconsciously start running to the rhythm of the song stuck in my head. That is not to say that they are great for they can be VERY annoying at times.

Earworms TW

I find earworms the most annoying when I absolutely hate the song and have only once heard it. It is also annoying when you can't remember the other half of the song. The song that is stuck in my head at the moment is some song from High Scool Musical from like 5 years ago.

Ear Worms JD

I HATE EAR WORMS!! I am always trying to get rid of them, especially when I'm doing easy tasks, like when I'm on my paper run. After reading the article, first in the paper and now, it reminded me of my two worst earworms, Hey Soul Sister and Single Ladies. Sometimes I can think of a song  and my brain will change the earworms but sometimes it just doesn't work.AAARRRGHH I don't want to hear Single Ladies again!! GO AWAY EARWORM!! AARRGGHH!!!!!!

Earworms (WILLIAM)

I hate it when I get earworms. The songs that are stuck in my head at the moment are When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars, I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift, Troublemaker by Olly Murs and Battle Scars by Guy Sebastian. I actually love all of them so in this case I don't mind at all but sometimes I get bad earworms such as Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

Earworms Luke E

Earworms

Why do we get Earworms? What are Earworms that you commonly get? A common earworm for me is the James Bond tune.

Earworms Henry C

I actually find that my earworms are the worst songs instead the best songs and the sudoku and the anagrams really help.

Ear Worms Hugh

You can not stop humming tunes because you have listened to a tune soooo many time that it just gets stuck in your head!!!!!! I have found that I think the most annoying tunes are all of Justin Beiber's songs as my sisters humm them so much!!!!

Earworms Rob

They are so hard to stop because you've listened to them so many times it is impossible to get it out of your mind. You can solve anagrams to get the music out of your mind but make sure they are not to hard. Or you can read a book. The most annoying tune I know would probably be the bob the builder tune and the thomas the tank engine tune because when I was little I watched them so many times I just couldn't stop singing it. But apparently lady gaga is the song the gets stuck in peoples brain. I don't sing it any more of course but it is still in my head. I find it really amazing that our brains can do that as well. I am not sure I guess you can kind of make the music inside your head. I could do it right now if I wanted to.

Earworms - Mr T

Today I read an article in the Dominion Post called Winning the war on earworms (yes the one you have just read...) and it got me thinking...I have been fascinated by this phenomenon for years and haven't really questioned it deeply, unlocked it, got to the bottom of it.  The article didn't really answer it either but did provide a few insights (and reminded me about Joe Simpson, author of Touching the Void, and on our booklistwho describes an annoying earworm as he struggled to survive in the Andes).  How do you think they work?  Why are they hard to stop?  What is your most annoying tune that gets stuck?  I know my children have been driving me mad with a song every dinner time.  I feel like I know it (well the chorus at least) like the back of my hand but I have never actually heard a recording of it.  Quite often I hear some of your boys humming away to yourself as you play your own internal jukebox.  Is it amazing that we can use our brains like Spotify to store and retrieve literally hundreds of songs at will?  How can we 'hear' inside our heads?

Green Light Theo

I really like my topic and I am really looking forward to researching and gathering information, then putting it all together. The topic I know least about would be the Enigma Code and the topic I would mostly want to do if it wasn't mine would be Wind Power. I think I.S. will help me greatly in college.

Green Light ET

I am feeling very comfortable with my topic this year. I also like the other topics in the classroom as well (if I could choose one it would probably be Captian James Cook). I feel it is going to be a very successful year and heaps of competition. Obviously I have a vision of my study being the perfect independent study, which, obviously won't happen! Lastly I think that I am quite well ahead this term and am happy with were I stand.

Green light Henry B-w

I really think everyone has chosen really juicy topics and that they will do really well. I am 100% with my topic The Violin and I have already started collecting up articals from the newspaper and pages from books all helping me learn more about my topic. If I had to choose someone elses topic I would choose Luke Evison's topic The Rise of The Roman Empire. I would have to say the hardest part about the I.S is the four prep stages not saying the other parts arn't hard its just its the hardest part.

Photography Independent Study

I think all the topics have reailly been thought out well and can make good independent studies, I like how people have chosen a wide range of topics, from famous people and civilizations to a complicated machine like the enigma. I'm already deeply stuck into my topic and don't regret it the slightest bit. I can just imagine my booklet on the shelf perfectly- there will be a massive lens on the front with my BSWQ and "The Invented Eye". I have considered The Roman Empire as a topic so Luke's would really be my favoured topic in the class. I don't know much about Sir. Don Bradman at all so I'm looking foward to listening to Henry's presentation. When I think about changing any of the 4 stages I tend think that perhaps the Solo taxonomy or the inspiration are reasonably similar and probably at least one would be unnecessary. I'm really looking forward to being able to whizz through my college work with the knowledge and experience this Year will give me (hopefully).

Green Lights (WILLIAM)

I like my topic and I don't think that I will change my topic. I have absolutely no knowledge about Callum B's topic about the enigma code or Campbell B's topic about Hergé.IIf I was someone else I would be Marcus doing the history of money because a topic very similar to that was on my TSM.

Green light.. Callum B

I'm not doing so well keeping up with everyone, but I am getting there. I think the topics this year are very diverse, but if I could do any other boy's topics at would be George's 'Fall of the Aztecs.'

Green Light Nicholas

I think I have nailed my topic 10/10 and I think Callum H's topic: The Tour De France is really good and would be my backup if I had to choose one of the other topics. I think I started off too slow but now I am making good progress and going along swiftly. So far the independent study has been not too hard. I think the independent study (and being in 7/8T) will make college life a lot easier.

P.S. What do you think the best peer question is?

Green light Callum h

I think I'm really happy with my I.S because I'm easilly a 10 out of 10 for interest. If I had to choose a topic other than the tour I would do Drugs in sport (Thomas Watkins) because Our topics are quite similar. I think my front page could have heaps of cyclists in the yellow jersey in small boxes. Personally I think I'm slightly behind on I.S.

Start Researching....Advice From Luke E

I think now we should start researching information for our Independent Studies. Books, magazines, internet, documentaries etc are all good sources of information. Be an information magnet. Any comments?

Green lights George

I think that the fall of the Aztecs is a good subject for me as I am really interested in it and hope that it lives up to my expectations. If I had to do a different topic out of one that someone else is doing I would do do the spitfire because I have a book with tonnes of info and pictures (Harry you can borrow it if you like) . The TSM was a good way to get a topic as it covers all aspects of the topic but it was really boring. I think the I.S will help a lot in college.

Rise Of The Roman Empire

Most of you will already know that my topic is the Rise Of The Roman Empire. This is from the 500 s BC to roughly 20 BC, in that time Ancient Rome became the world's first superpower. My biggest focus will be on Caesar and his period. Any information you have for me about Ancient Rome  is appreciated.

IND Response

I think the variety of topics is pretty big. Its easily going to be a great year from what I can tell. Im incredibly into my topic right now as I am getting the four stages under way very quickly and doing my research early.

My booklet and presentation last year weren't so good in my opinion and this year im trying to have a much better booklet and presentation. I think the things I did wrong was leaving things until the last minute, which im definetly not doing this year. If I was to try another boys topic, I may do The Spitfire, as I am currently into planes, or Herge, which books i've been reading for a long time now.

For the topic that I would know least about, would probably be Sir Don Bradman, whoever that is... If I could change the prep stages for the Independent study, I would probably make there be limits to the amount of things you need in SOLO, Inspiration and the TSM. I would make the SOLO activity list need a certain amount of activities or more, and same with topics in the TSM.

I reckon I am ahead of the place where I need to be right now, as most boys are staring their inspiration stage while ive almost finished it and have started my SOLO. The hardest thing about the independent study would be inspiration, as there is a huge amount of drafts needed to be handed in before its done. According to my brother, the IND is incredibly helpful for college as it prepares you for long projects.

Green lights here we come...

I'm not doing so well keeping up with everyone, but I am getting there. I think the topics this year are very diverse, but if I could do any other boy's topics George's 'Fall of the Aztecs.'

Green Light Hugh

Man this year is going fast! I am very happy with my topic G.P.S and I give it 1000 out of 10. My favourite other topic from this class has got to be the Spitfire as a think it is a very interesting topic. The one I don't know much about is definitely the inigma code.

Green Lights Harryc

Green lights are supposidly coming before the end of term 1. That is amazing I have never heard of a green light given before the end of term 1. Mr Tait was telling us last year about how some boy got his green light at the end of term 3. At the moment my independent study seems to be on track. Like what you said Mr Tait there is a great range of topics this year. One thing that I have noticed is that there arn't many topics based around war this year. I'm pretty sure last year there was not one year 7 topic based on war. Iam so into my topic this year I just can't wait to get started. One thing that I would like to try and do would be is to try to have my booklet finished and with me when I do my presentation. Overall I belive I am on track. As for a green light I hope I get mine before the end of the term.
Harryc

Green Lights Campbell

I am feeling very comfortable with where I am on my topic.   I think that the topic I am trying to do is a very good one for me as it gives me an opportunity to avoid the dump truck approach and ask some really intelligent questions.  I am really looking forward to settling down in the winter months and just working on my Independent study.

Green Lights Jesse

I think an IS is good project to prepare you for college. The topic I know least about would probably be the Enigma Code. I think I am at a good stage of my IS for this far in the year, I am working on my first draft of my Inspiration. I think the hardest part is the Inspiration and coming up with a total of 31(its 31 isn't it?)  questions about my topic. Overall, I think IS is really fun and they should do it in other schools too.

independent study Henry C

I am still into my topic 10/10 but getting to the booklet and presentation at the end of the year seems a long way away. I thought the TSM was quite hard especially trying to find the category and the topic but the focus and the ratings were easy enough.

Green lights here we come... Marcus

I am really looking forward to researching and writing about my topic. Now that I have some experience I am feeling very confident. If I were to change anything it would be the SOLO. I think a prestructural angle would be a very interesting way to sort of 'introduce' your topic, meaning the reader can understand what you went through and the time you sacrificed to do this, like a prologue.

I am really looking forward to seeing and reading about topics at the end of the year. There are some great topics!

Green Light-Thomas Watkins

Although I am greatly into my topic, I think that this year that all the other topic are fantastic too. If I could choose between the other topics I would easily choose, for  my interests, Tour De France(Callum Hancock).  I think this year my front cover of my booklet could look strange, possibly an E.P.O. drug or another drug, or maybe Lance Armstrong:-). This year as year 8 I will hopefully get a better score and more people will like my Ind Study. Overall, I think this year I will have a better Study as I am more intrigued about my topic.

Green Lights JD

The topics are really widespread. I can't wait to do my independent study, it's going to be awesome!!!! I'm not sure which topic I would chose if I couldn't do trucks, I probably wouldn't be interested in I.S. but maybe the Spitfire? I looove machines and vehicles, I've found a truck I want to buy, search Bedford ML on Trade-Me, it's also awesome!

Green Lights Noah

I think the independent studies are going really well. I can't wait to start... but i think i'm going to fail half way through the year. If I could do someone else's topic I would do Hergé but that's not the case. I think the independent studies are a really good idea. I have kinda got my front page pictured in my head. So the year has gone quite well for me.

The Spitfire Harry

I think that the supermarine spitfire is a really good topic for me because I am really into aircraft and the spitfire and I think that the range of topics is really great. I think that I have caught up to where I should be at this stage of the year and I think that I am going well.  The fall of the Aztecs is a pretty good topic and one that I am quite interested in, but they are all pretty interesting and well chosen.

Green Lights Rob

I think the topics that everyone has chosen are good. I'm very happy with my topic. 10/10 for the Vikings. I reckon my booklet at the end of the year will say The Viking Conquests, how have they changed the course of history. There will be an awesome picture on the front. I would quite like to do Louis g's topic captain james cook if I couldn't do the Vikings. I don't know anything about Callum b's topic the enigma code so I think it will be interesting for me and maybe some other people at the end of the year. I would change nothing with my four prep stages. I am definitely where I should be with my independent study this year. I am doing much better than I did last year. It is the harder activities that are really hard to find information for. I think at college this piece of work would keep me thinking a lot.

Green Lights Jin

This year there are some great topics and the preperation stages going at a very past pace. I am still interested in my topic and I am looking forward to doing some investigating more. I probably know the least about the enigma code so i'm looking forward to that one. If I had to chose a topic I would do thomas's 'Drugs in Sport'. I think I am behind were i want to be right now but I know that I can pull that back easily.

Green Light Ben

I am 10/10 into my topic of the Twin Towers. I like it because it has a lot of different angles to it. If I had to pick another topic it would be Edward's topic of the Titanic because it interests me the most. I think that the hardest part of my independent study will be the info sorting. I think it will be hard because of all the the different conspiracy theories. Doing an I.S is a very good idea for college and university because you do not get much help and it is very good practice for your other independent tasks.

Green lights here we come...Mr T

Boys - we have 24 topics nailed down for our Independent Studies of 2013.  What a range!  I am very excited about this year because we have started the ball rolling early and I can see quite a few 'green lights' being given BEFORE the end of T1.  Year 8 boys are feeling very comfortable with the system we use and are proving to be great mentors towards the Year 7 boys.  The I.S. has now been running for 10 years in this classroom and I feel that, with the minor tweaks from year to year, it is a great learning opportunity.  What do you think of the topics?  How 'into' your topic are you?  What is your vision for your booklet and presentation at the end of the year?  If you had to pick another boy's topic, which one would you choose?  Which topic do you know the least about?  What would you change with the four 'prep' stages?  Do you think you are where you should be at this stage of the year?  What is the hardest thing about I.S.?  How do you think this piece of work will help you at college?

Theatre review...

I read the reviews in the Dominion Post™, and I think a review that criticizes a performance negatively can be quite damaging to the people that put a lot of time and effort into the performance.
I do buy stuff that has had a good review, and I do think reviews are important.
The first show was average, but I think 'Dog' was pretty funny.
The second might've  been OK if we were at the front so we could see him interact with the other audience.
The third: the musis was good, but the acting was weird.

Theatre Review #3

I personally thought that that the second one was not quite as good as the others. perhaps it was because it was soundless and hard to follow. I also thought the last one was hard to follow, at least it was a good time to go to sleep.

Theatre Review

I thought the first show was a bit immature and the jokes were lame but I did like the storyline. The second show was quite entertaining with the tricks the man did, but the show dragged on and got boring. In the third show the music was amazing, on the other hand though it was quite hard to tell what was going on.

Theatre Review

I reckon that if I sat down the bottom in the front row for "the man the sea saw"I probably would of enjoyed the show better because when the actor interacted with the audience everybody sitting at the top had to stand up and bend over to try and see him. And if I did sit in the front row I would've had a chance to interact with him.

Blog

Show #1 was really bad show #2 was still bad show #3 was alright but still I didn't get the message. I think the man the sea saw should have been at downstage and the man who planted trees at the opera house.

Theatre Review Ben

My personal thoughts are that you can write a review by criticizing the content as it is just as good if not better way to share your thoughts on something. I sometimes read reviews on apps I am looking at or books I'm looking to get. I think that a bad review can be damaging if it is put somewhere public like on a talk show, the radio or in the paper otherwise it will not be likely to be noticed. I would of liked to change the order of the shows so that The Man Who Planted Trees swapped with The Man the Sea Saw. I would have kept the Sky Dancer last because I needed that sleep in the afternoon.

Theatre Review Jesse

I thought that although the first and third shows on Monday were good, the third didn't really appeal to our age group. But even though I didn't like it I think its important that we recognize how many hundreds of hours those performers would've put in to that performance. But I thought the second one was just plain terrible. As for reviews, I don't tend to buy something based on reviews, but on recommendations by my friends, family, and the people at our bookstore. I think that negative reviews can be extremely damaging to the performance, and you should only do one, if you thought it was really terrible. I thought Sky Dancer was pretty bad and boring, but not bad enough for me to write a terrible review about it.

Theatre Reveiw

I thought that the First show was very good.  The second show I disliked.  It was interesting because the venue difinetly affected that one for when the actor came foward into the crowd all of Wellesley stood up to try and get a better veiw.  The third show was alright and didn't have a venue problem.

Theatre Review Marcus

Sky Dancer was pretty good actually though some people deny it. It just got a bit tedious to watch because of the length. The Man who planted trees was moving and funny and the dog was tank!

Theatre Review Noah

I think that the capital E thing was an interesting series of shows, The Man Who Planted Trees was quite different to the other two, TMWPT (The Man Who Planted Trees) had more depth to it. The Man The Sea saw was a boring performance that droned on for way to long, every ten minutes it seemed to repeat. The sky dancer was the same as the second one it repeated every half hour so overall i would give the thing 6/10.

Theatre review George

The capital  E thing was pretty cool  but I didn't really like the man the sea saw because I couldn't understand it.  There was no talking and so I found it impossible too keep track of. I preferred The Man who planted trees as the storyline was very good and the dog was so funny!

Theatre review

Personally I don't read reviews so this week I found the WNB kind of hard to start but I looked on line and found some reviews of the man who planted trees and now I'm already finished. On monday personally I loved the first show and didn't mind the second, most people were commenting on the bad parts of it but I thought some parts were very well done.

Theatre review Rob

I do read reviews depending if it is something that I am going to watch soon. I do got to stuff based on the review. Reviews aren't neccesarily bad for the movie its just what someone thinks. Someone could like the movie someone might not like the movie. Always include your comment. The man the sea saw in the front seats. But otherwise fine venue and fine order. it wouldn't of made a difference to me if I was watching with my family.

Theatre Review Luke Evison

I liked the first show the most, disliked the second one and thought the third one was OK. What were your thoughts on the shows?

Theatre Review

The WNB topic this week is very relevant to our recent events as on Monday we went and saw three shows. The Man Who Planted Trees was by far the most interesting and best (in my opinion) because of this it was certainly my favourite. I can understand that other people's opinions may be very different because they may have been looking for different standards. My standards were they need to have something realistic about them, preferably they should be funny and they shouldn't drag on (which is exactly what The Man The Sea Saw did) and the actors should be casual. Please comment on this.

Theatre Review JD

I don't pay attention to reviews or base what I buy on them, so I find it hard to write them, even after looking at quite a few on the internet. I'm doing my WNB on my favourite one, the man who planted trees, but if the man the sea saw had different seating or was in a different venue, I would have enjoyed it more and might have done my review on that one.

Capital E Theatre Review

Yesterday we had a great opportunity to get out of the classroom and see some live theatre/music.  What a treat!  It got me thinking about a few things: 1. that there are some immensely talented people out there who make something very difficult look very simple (raw talent? - perhaps, practice? - definitely). 2. We all have likes and dislikes, preferences etc.  That is what makes the world go around. Variety is the spice of life...isn't it?  I was interested today to see where your WNB theatre reviews would take you and whether you stuck to the 'review my favourite' or would stick yourself out on a limb and criticise something.  That is hard to do but a skill worth nurturing.  Just like our Letters to the Editor, one of the points of this piece of writing is to write a real world review of a real world show which you had actually been to.  Do you read reviews?  Do you buy stuff or go to something based on  a review?  How damaging can a bad review be?  What do you think is the main thing to remember when writing a review.  Was there a show you would have liked to have seen with different seating?  Different venue?  Different order?  Seen with your family?

Book or movie

Most of the time books are much better than movies, with few exceptions of  The Life of Pi and the final harry potter movie. Note: this is only my opinion. The phantom tollbooth movie is rather boring compared to the book, and the book is better. I think it would be better if we read the whole book before reading the movie, the read the full movie at once. That is how I find it best when watching movies.

I reckon the movies that aren't based on anything are the best books. Avatar, for example, is a movie that isn't based on a book. Look at all the Oscar Winners. Most of them aren't based on a book. A combination of movies/books I like is the Hunger Games, as the book is excellent and the movie brings it out. Life of Pi, I also like, as I said before. I'd prefer to read the book then watch the movie as books are mor interesting for me.

Book or Movie

I personally think that  it is important to read the book before watching the movie. If you watch the movie first then it will create an illusion that will then make it easy to neglect reading the book because while the movie is "attition drawing" the book is alway easy to neglect because it's not always so drawing. So with The Hobbit, The Life of Pi and all other books that I read before watching the movie, I am glad I read the book first.

Phantom Tolbooth

What are your thoughts on the phantom tolbooth? Personally I think it is OK. The book is much better than the movie. What are your thoughts?

Book or Movie

I usually don't like the how the characters look in the movies as it ruins how I percieve the Characters in the book but normally I don't think about this when I watch a movei about I book I like and just watch the movie anyway.  But sometimes afterwards I regret watching the movie.  Although sometimes the movie adds to the book.

Book Or Movie

I personly like reading the books better than I like watching the movie of the book, because I find the movie quite often leave lots of stuff out and that fustrates me. Take the hunger games as an example, they left lots of vital things out of the movie that are in the book and I reckon the movie could be alot better with those parts that they left out.

What Books Are Good Books

With so many books swirling around these days, there a obviously huge numbers of good books. However, this also means books are of lower quality than in the past. So, I ask you which books you think are really top-quality books?

Should People Read More?

Should People Read More?

I was prompted by the prompt and I thought people seem to watch more movies and TV than read the books. Do we not do enough reading? I'll be interested in your answers.

Book or Movie?

I think the phantom tolbooth is really quirky and it has some great puns. I think it is a book where you have to think about the context before you get the joke, though.
I think the movie is OK, but the Doldrums part is really boring.
I am more of a book person, but I like movies too.

Movies

I like movies more than books. I would much rather spend my time watching movies than reading. In saying that though, books are great and when I get into a good book I cant put them down

Movie vs Book

I personly think that the books are normaly better than the movie. But sometimes the movie are better but quite rearly.

Book or Movie?

I think the phantom tollbooth is a great book and it is really quirky. The phantom tollbooth movie was good but the doldrums part wasn't entertaining, I know it is supposed to be boring but it went on for about 10 minutes.

The harry Potter books were amazing and I think the movies were a credit beacause they pictured the scenes like they were in my imagination apart from Malfoy.

The hobbit was one of the besty books I have ever read. The movie was amazing but some of the made up parts like: Azorg ,Radagast the Brown and the ledge where they were throwing pinecones (it was actually flat).

Overall most of the time I prefer the book over the movie.

P.S. Frrench and English was fun we should make the most of the Summer/sunny Autmn.

Response to Book or Movie

In The Hobbit I think that since the movie is very modern and has used all of the new technology it gives me a lot better idea of what's going on. The book still seems a lot better though because I get to use my imagination for my own idea of what's going on. In The Hunger Games I think that the book is a lot better for the same reason as The Hobbit. I can't wait until The Hunger Games Catching Fire movie comes out because it will hopefully end this streak of liking the book more than the movie. Please comment on your thoughts.

Movie or book

One book(s) that I've read and seen the movie is Harry Potter. For my opinion it varies between liking some of the books more than the movie, like how I wish I hadn't read the book for the Philosopher's stone but on the Order of the Phoenix I wish I hadn't seen the movie. I also like the movie for the Phantom Tollbooth as well as the book.
I have read the hobbit boook and seen the movie and I thought that the book was better then the movie. But the movie did provide a better picture in my mind of what everything looked like. And with the hunger games movie I feel like they left out important parts of the book and that also gos for the hobbit movie but in the hobbit movie they also changed bits and added bits.

books and Movies George

I would have rather not have seen the movie for the phantom tollbooth as to took the sheen off of the book. The Hobbit movie was so good and I think that it is highly unfair that it didn't win any Oscars just because it wasn't as dark and mysterious as the Lord of the Rings. On the Lord of the Rings I enjoyed the books, watched the movies, read the books again and the books were seemingly terrible in comparison.  In short, most movies are good if made from books but  I think the authors should have more of  a say in the making. The changes made in the Hobbit were good but in Eragon the author was a little bit annoyed about them.

Book or Movie Henry b-w

I have read a lot of  books and then watched the movie and really I think the book is 90% of the time better then the movie mostly because I like to let my imagination run free and think up what the places and characters. The other 10% is because the movies sometimes add more detail then the book.

Book or Movie Ben

I personally think that it is better to read the book first because that gives you the true story straight from the authors head. But the movies are just a bunch of movie stars and Hollywood hotshots trying to recreate the story the way they find it best . Saying that, I still enjoy the movies so i can compare what the hotshots thought it would look like and what I thought it would look like. I can think of lots of book/movie combo's that i would of rather not seen the movie including The Phantom Tollbooth and some of the Harry Potters. But honestly, I cannot think of a combination where the book is the worst, only movies.

Book or Movie

I am actually finding it hard to remember when I last had the book/movie combo. I did enjoy the movie phantom tollbooth, but it was a bit confusing compared to the book. I wish we had watched all of it so I could compare book/movie as I have read the book before.
Who likes to read the book before you see the movie because it always seems to give me a better understanding of the movie. I have always loved the movies but I have always loved the books as well.

Black Caps openers

Does anyone have any idea for who can be the Black Caps openers for the tests against England because the past openers have struggled against the new ball.

Book or Movie Rob

I quite liked the movie and I really enjoyed the rest of it. But I don't think i really needed to see it. It did add a little bit of understanding to the book. There were quite a lot of changes in the movie from the book I can't count. I have watched the life of pi and I was happy reading the book and watching the movie. I haven't watched a movie in the cinemas for ages a part from the life of pi. And most of the books I have read do not have movies even though I think they should.

Letter to Editor

Letter to editor this week. I think I'm doing the fact that the hobbit won no oscars right after the oscar record holder "return of the king". Please leave a comment on your topic.

Book or movie?

Boys - we are currently approximately 2/3 through our first class novel of the year.  As a teacher I strongly believe in having a book 'on the go' as a class.  The Phantom Tollbooth has been a fantastic lighthearted starter for the year - some would say it is a classic, some would say it baffling and childish (it is a children's book I guess), most would say entertaining in some way.  A couple of weeks ago we had a look at part of the 1970 movie version. I would like you to watch the rest in your own time and finish it by the end of next week (P List time? BYO earplugs).  What did you make of the movie version?  Would you have preferred NOT to see it?  Did it add any value to your understanding and enjoyment of the book?  What liberties did the movie writers/directors/producers take with the story?  Did it 'work' for you?  A few of you (especially yr 8s after having had the novel read to you last year) have seen Life of Pi.  I have not seen it (I probably will when it is released on itunes) but will not be too worried if I don't.  To me the novel was the door to creating a picture in my head.  I believe most books can be recreated by the inner writer/director/producer.  Some add value, others do not.  The Hobbit movie adds value (to the book) for me.  If you have seen it, did it do the same for you?  What is another book/movie combination you have enjoyed?  Can you name one where you would rather not have watched the movie?  Or, rather, not have read the book?
