Science Fair Hugh

I'm starting to get a bit worried about the science fair, as we have only just nailed our topic and I'm still a bit confused about my topic. I'm working with Henry and he is a globle phononima in good logbooking. I think me and Henry will work well together and we will be good at having fun along the way. Yes we do have a logbook and it is coming along well.

I have been enjoying the science fair so far. I am doing catapults and i have a whole board of catapults ready to fire.My greatest challenge will probably be writing down all of the testing scores for the catapults. I am REALLY looking forward to firing the catapults.

Science Fear - Ben

This year I am doing my science fair with Harry. We decided to do a human behavioural topic because it is rather challenging and we would both enjoy it. After a while we settled on Facial Recognition.

Honestly I'm not stressed about science fair in any way. I think that we are doing well and have a lot of time to do extra planning. We also have a log book which I think will help us keep up with what we are doing and it will also help us keep things organised.

Our greatest challenge will probably be getting enough people so that we can do the testing. Our goal is to do as well as we possibly can and if possible, get a placing.

The Science Show! Piano!- Jesse

I'm doing a Wind Power project with Nadler, which is very fun and we have a lot of background, considering it was my topic for Independent Study last year. My vision is to have a very organised board with lots of information that could possibly help future Wind Power companies. Our greatest challenge so far has been constructing the turbine itself and getting the voltmeter to work. We don't have a log book yet, but we might get one. I think our project really applies in the real world. So far we haven't really been using a 'to do list' we're just doing whatever needs to be done. It's been working so far.

SYINSE FEER - CALLUM, BEN FELL OFF A CLIFF.

Me and George are doing pretty well with our Science Fair. Our topic is to build an automatic dog feeder. We aren't to far through, and I think we'll start  building the actual dog feeder on Wednesday, with a bit of help from Mr. Mahoose!

Science Fear - Toby M

I am really excited about science fair and think we're progressing really well. We might be testing our catapults today! Personally I don't think we should be testing them today but Tim has all of the equipment. We will probably finish our work over the weekend when Tim comes to my house. I am really pleased with how well we are doing with our project.

No fear of Science! -Gus M

Sience fair is the biggest topic scince year four. Ben and I know what we're going to do, but he's changed it, again! Mr Tait say we just check the temperature of the boiling water but we want to generate electricity and impress the judges: no electricity generation= not much money ($$$). But anyway, all ben wated to change was: the whole reactor (except the reactor core). That means we can't use a dynamo, because Ben wants to use a heat exchanger. I would agree (and I do) it's just that we don't know how one works. Ben said he would just ask his mum... who's in Australia at the moment.

I don't fear science... but I do fear the science fear. And fear itself by the way.

Science Fear-Harry W

Ben and I have decided on something that we both agree on (but that took some time) and we are both really looking forward to it. We are doing something on face recognition and our testing is very nearly underway. I am not quite sure what our board will look like at the end but I'm hoping it will look good. Our greatest challenge will be getting all of the test subjects and testing them but I'm pretty confident we'll manage. We do have a log book which we are writing down a lot of notes in. Our project does have something to do with real world problems as a lot of eye-witnesses aren't very helpful and we are trying to find out which age group/gender is the most reliable. I am most looking forward to the actual testing and seeing what results we get. We have been filling out our To Do lists and ticking things off as we go.

SYINSE FEER Jorje

Science fair has been very cool this year and although me and Foamy haven't done anything I have a basic idea of what we will do. The main problem will be timing the release so we may have to make an auto dispenser. I think we have a logbook. Hopefully the dogs will not get too fat after this!

Science Fair - Henry C

For me Science Fair this year has really not been the most enjoyable year because me and Hugh (I know its Hugh and I) haven't really thought of a topic and we are about two weeks behind everyone else. We have thought of a few topics but they are all really hard topics for like year eleven and we are really not up to that standard at the moment in year eight. So I really hope that we can get a move on soon and get this Science Fair done and dusted.

Science Fear - Callum H

At the moment I am really not enjoying science fair I think I've got the science fear (good one). I'm sure when we're finished I will look back fondly on this time but right now I'm not enjoying it.

My partner is awesome and I'm sure it will be fun.

In the meantime I'm like. :'(

Science Fair/Fear-Ben S

I must admit, I don't like Science Fair. Especially this year, as I'm swimming in paperwork (Quote Source: Mr. Tait), but I think I'll get by. I mean, it's all been done before, right? My partner is Gus, and we are looking at electricity generation, and whether mixed fuels willl produce more electricity. Einstein has helped us in this with his electric field and magnetic field similarity (that's right, Einstein. I met him five days ago, and we discussed our topic ;).

Fear of Science - Josh

I am feeling excited about the Science Fair. I am working with Sam and our topic is - What is the best tactic to memorise a long list of things? I think that the greatest challenge will be writing out all the materials, methods, hypothesis etc. The problem we are trying to solve is when people have to try and make other people remember a long list of things and some people forget what they were saying. I am most excited about doing the tests on our test subjects!

Science fear- Toby C

I am loving my science fair topic is what food wrapping is the best to store cut apple in. I am ridding solo on this one. Yes I do have a log book it has helped me in many ways. My goal is to help everyone so their apples stay as fresh as possible. If you were wondering what is the best is tightly wrapped in tin foil or in a sealable bag.

Science Fair - Jim

My topic for science fair this year is testing if  watering cut flowers with water with additives preserves them longer. I want my science fair board to look simple but effective with everything fitting on. I will also add a few photos as well. My greatest challenge will be recording the results every day and writing them down. My real world problem is that people want their house to look nice and so with having flowers inside you want them to last long so that you don't hve to buy more every week. That is my aim to try and make the flowers last longer.

science fear Andrew

I wasn't sure what I was going to do before Ben Ross said I shoud do something about mummification, so I did some reasearch and I figured I could mummify a hot dog!
My greatest challenge will probably be writing the background stuff and all that writing to do seeing as the experiment is reasonably straight forward. Yes, I do have a log book. I am really looking forward to see if I really can replicate the process OF mummification, as a have read all about it with my project.

ecneicS raeF-xaM

My fair topic is "Bio-Spheres. No one. I do not have a logbook yet but I plan on purchasing one. Indirectly, but there is a connection. My goals are to find out what effect the introduction of animals to a closed eco-system or get a prize.

Science Fair-Luke

Science fair is going well and I'm really enjoying it and I'm finding it fun. The hardest part is finding 60 people to test my science fair on or it might be finding a security video. I hope that I win some cash. It would be cool if someone got to go and present the school at the NZ science fair.

Science FEAR Nicholas

I am freaked out that Science fair is coming up so quickly.  I have not yet decided on my topic but I really want to get a prize. I hope to find a topic by Monday. Not much else to say. Nicholas

Science Fear- Will S

I'm really looking forward to science fair,
the topic Callum Hancock and I have choosen is what energy drink is best for before a race.
I am really excited about this topic because it is something interesting and it is something that will keep us hooked the whole time.

Science Fear - Mr T

Good morning boys - I speak to you from afar but I may be watching (look up at the small black round thingy on the ceiling…).  Science Fair is coming up very quickly and the weeks are speeding by.  There is a need for some urgency and that is why next week will be treated as a 'Booster Week' to get ourselves ahead.  What topic have you settled on?  Who are you working with?  What is your 'vision' for your Science Fair board?  What will be your greatest challenge?  Do you have a log book?  Have you got that 'real world' problem link?  What are you most looking forward to doing as part of your work for this?  What is your goal for your project?  Have you continued with your 'to do' list?

animal farm

It is a great book I think a book has to be old and good at the same time to become a classic. Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies, and Little Red Riding Hood.

Napoleon
Old Major

Animal Farm - Toby Marks

I think a classic is a book written and set at least forty years. It's only Friday and we're nearly a third of the way through Animal Farm. So far I am enjoying it and can already see the changes in Napoleon. I can recognise the similarities between Animal Farm and rise of the appliances eg: the names and the seven commandments. Some classics are Oliver Twist, Alice in Wonderland and a Christmas Carol.

Animal Farm- Theo

I really like  this time of year because we get to read Lord of the Flies or this year Animal Farm. I think a classic book is a book that has stood the test of time, meaning that it is still popular after a long time. I think Lord of the Flies is a classic too. I have noticed that Napoleon is a dominant character and is also very selfish. Napoleon taking the milk has kick-started the corruption of Animal Farm. I am looking forward to seeing how the horses characters unfold because they have interesting personalities. I think the revolution started when the cow broke into the feed store. I am also enjoying doing the snapshots for the book.

Oink Oink Moo Moo Cock-A-Doodle-Doo Neigh Neigh Baa Baa Woof Woof Purr Purr Quack Quack Squawk Squawk - William

Animal Farm completely fascinates me. I have enjoyed it from the second I first saw the movie, before I read the book. I have been doing some background research on Animal Farm as it is so appealing to me. I am really looking forward to reading the book again (even though we are almost halfway through).

The way that power can change humans is quite surprising, it has a large effect on their appearance and personality and in general, changes who they are. It is certainly my favourite novel I have ever read with Lord of the Flies coming in a while back but still amazing second.

Noises included in the novel:

Oink Oink Moo Moo Cock-A-Doodle-Doo Neigh Neigh Baa Baa Woof Woof Purr Purr Quack Quack Squawk Squawk

Animal Farm - Andrew

I think that the term 'classic' refers to if it has a deeper meaning, or if it has a vital or reflective meaning. I think this book is a classic because of how it relates to The Russian revolution and the whole concept of Communism. Here are a few classics
1. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
2. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain
3. Moby Dick
Already, you can see that Napoleon is becoming more and more secretive and also gaining more power. The milk being taken is a sign that the pigs are taking everything for themselves and slowly the seven commandments are becoming irrelevant. The rebellion was sort of thrown at them, as the farmers found the animals eating out of the stores of food, a cow rammed one of the farmers and so it had started. Soon the farm was man free and all was well... or so they thought.

Animal Farm

Animal farm this, Animal Farm that. We even have the seven commandmants on the wall! Despite the fact we are up to chapter four, I have read up to chapter eight (Other people, they read so slowly)! Because of this, I have learnt a great deal. for instance, Mollie... oh, whoops! Can't tell, sorry. But I can tell you that, just the same in the movie, Napolean is a ruthless dictator. Oh, and it's good that I've finished the outline of my Animal Farm... poster-like thing. If you want to find anything else, read my other blog post: Term 2- it's a trap!

Animal-Harry W

I think this book is a classic because it is a satire of a very important part of history when Joseph Stalin took power and terrorised everyone. I consider Lord of the flies, The Phantom Tollbooth and The true history of the Kelly Gang to be classics. Napoleon is already manipulating the other animals and seizing power. The pigs taking the milk is just the start of a long history of power. When I watched the movie Jessie was the main character and I haven't really heard her in the book and I can't wait till Napoleons character unfolds. The rebellion sparked when the farmers didn't fed the animals and they just got fed up and stormed the food shed. I like doing the snapshots for each chapter because it is fun coming up with your view of the chapter.

Animal Farm - Henry C

Animal Farm for me is a good book to read in class because of the way the story unravels at a pace that keeps everyone interested but doesn't rush it through to much that the storyline and the plot seems rushed so you don't get a good idea about the plot. For a story trying to criticize the Russian revolution it was actually a very good story and even without trying to get the message out about the revolution. I quite like the snapshots because they are very much about what you see in the chapter and also if you keep up and do a snapshot every chapter you will get dine very quickly and on time.

laminA mraF - xaM

I think it's a classic because it describes the flaws and history of the Russian communist revolution in a fun, fairytale-like way. Robinson Crusoe, Moby Dick, Lord of the flies. I have noticed the fist signs of corruption and manipulation. I find it not that enjoyable doing the snapshots because I only recently started doing them in conjunction with the chapters

Animal Farm - Jim

I think that animal farm is treated as a classic because of it's originality and how it is so cleverly tied to the Russian revolution and the characters relate back to people from history. I think a classic is a original  or even 'out there's book which becomes very popular because of the way it changes peoples perspective or how the author ties the story to something people can relate to. I have noticed Napoleon is taking advantage of the situation and using the trust and respect he has built with the other animals to get his way and make them believe that his greedy actions are for the better. The milk disappearing is quite a big issue as well as the apples being eaten because the animals are living on rations and working hard while not much out of it. It is also raising concern for the other animals but their doing nothing about it so they should be becoming aware of how powerless they are. I'm interested to see how Boxer unfolds because he is the main power behind the farm strength wise but not that intelligent so anything could happen.

Animal Farm - JOSH

This week I have been enjoying the first few chapters of Animal Farm and I am really excited to see what unfolds. I think this book is a classic because it has a really deep meaning and is cleverly written and it is a real page turner. I think a classic is a book that always keeps you on the edge of your seat and is cleverly written and always has a bit of a back story with it. I can already tell that Napoleon is going to be a lot of trouble. In my opinion I think Napoleon is selfish, greedy and power hungry but I also think that he is very clever for takiing advantage of the revolution and making himself leader. I think the disapperance of the milk was fairly signifigant because you see how the pigs are manipulating their power and are lying to the other farm animals. I am really looking forward to see what will happen to Molly as she is very stupid and seems to miss her ribbons and her old life. No one really expected the Russian revolution to happen when it did and it was a similar case in animal farm when they all decided that it was time for a revolution. I am really enjoying drawing and writing captions for the poster.

Animal farm.mraf laminA Tim H

I have been thoroughly enjoying the class novel Animal farm It is an amazing satire about communism and corruption. Some books are considered classics because they are :

  • Famous
  • Enjoyable
  • Old-ish
This book is all three. The way the rebellion started was odd. The animals did no planning whatsoever but they still managed to kick people (with guns) out of their own farm all because they forgot to feed them.
rebellion in its slowest form

Animal Farm- Toby Cook

I am loving Animal Farm I am also loving the poster we are doing. I have noticed that Napoleon is greedy for power. I am looking forward to seeing Boxer unfold because he is one of the biggest animals on the farm.

Animal Farm-Ben S

I think a classic is a book that has a regular  interpretation. I mean, why would you write a story if nothing happened at all? You have to have a problem, and a resolution. You ahve the regular mundane life on a farm, and then something massive happens. It actually starts from the beginning of Animal Farm, with Old Major's speech on a revolution. I think we probably shouldn't have seen the movie first, as it kind of spoils the entire book when you know what's about to happen (see Spoilers). I think it's best to have a mental picture first, and then see how it plays out in the movie. At these early stages, it's rather hard to see what Napoleon is truly like. I mean, he's currently caring for the nine puppies, of course to no good intention, but if you hadn't seen the movie, you would still think of him helping out. It's rather strange of him to hate Snowball's ideas. After all, his ideas are the best for all the animals...

Animal Farm- Will S

I think this book is a classic because it has been around for awhile and is very well known, it is also because he author of the book is very well known and is renound for the book.
I also think that the milk is a sign of unfairness and is in total violation of animalism and it shows that the pigs think they are in complete power.
I am also really looking forward to seeing what happens with boxer and if he has any difference on what the outcome of the book is going to be.

Animal Farm - Callum H

So far I am really enjoying animal farm and I really wish I could talk to the man himself Eric Blair. My favourite character at the moment is probably the cat because we didn't see him in the movie and I am interested to see if he contributes more to the story. If I had to pick one character from the class that represents a character from the story, it would probably be Mr Tait as Napoleon. ;)

Animal Farm-Luke

I think that a classic it has old wording. Animal Farm is like a book that takes action a few other books are 1. Charlotte's Web 2. I Cant Remember The Last One, the last book has a very interesting title. I'm finding the class novel very interesting and it is a very action packed book and there is always a problem to overcome.

Animal Farm- Nicholas

I am really enjoying Animal Farm so far, it is a great short read! I think this is a classic because it is cleverly wrote and it is timeless. I think a classic is a great timeless story that makes you feel you are there. For example Robinson Crusoe, Tom Sawed and Harry Potter. I am looking forward to seeing Squealer talk about all the propaganda. The rebellion started with Old Major's dream which reminded him of how horribly the farm animals were being treated. I love doing the storyboard but I don't like the study guide.

Nicholas McDermott

Animal Farm - Mr T

Good morning boys.  T2 means either Lord of the Flies or Animal Farm and this year we are being treated to Orwell's classic.  Why do you think that this book is a classic?  What makes a book a 'classic'?  Name three other books which you consider to be classic.  We have just started this book but with your Performing Arts work earlier in the year you know the rough outline.  What have you already noticed about Napoleon?  How significant is the seemingly minor issue of the milk disappearing quietly?  Which characters are you most looking forward to seeing unfold and develop as we read?  What are your thoughts on how the rebellion actually started?  Oh and...how enjoyable is it when we do our 'snapshots' for each chapter?

T2-it's a trap/Term One smmary

Term one has ended, term two has started. And with the term finally setting in, somthing else that has setted in is not welcome. The harsh Wellington winter is coming, and it's going to take a lot more than a wooly jacket to keep it out. And something else that's not welcome is here: Harsh Homework. Term one is definitely more cushy then this term. Last term was an amazing one, but wether or not this one will be, we can only hope (quote from 19th centry writer when he was predicting what the 20th would be like. He obviously didn't know the horror it would bring). If I could (and I can) summarize term one it would be.... umm, still can't think of one yet... wait, I've got it! The term of begining.

T1 its a burrito-Jorje

Term one was good. Although I was sure I would be sorted really quickly with my independent study I think I am a bit short of the gallop. I blame it on taking soo long on my topic but I have found a good one so fingers crossed I will be able to get the ball rolling at supersonic speed to consolidate for the delay. This year the year sevens are good so there have been no fights (yet!).  I was bummed about missing seconds cricket but I went into a patch of bad form so it was fair enough. I am looking forwards to the new term and hope it will even better!

T1 It's a wrap- Will

I have a great first term in 7/8T and am very excited for term two, So far I have really enjoyed being a senior, robotics, art and PE they have all been so much fun and it has been awesome to be able to do it with new people.
I have also really liked the 7/8T experience and learning how to do the independent study with detail and skill, my favorite part has been the inspiration table.
I also really like the fact that Mr Tait reads us a class book this term my favorite was the curious incident of the dog in the night time.

BIOMIMICRY

Hey guys, I still need peer questions, and I'm pretty sure that's because not many of you  know what Biomimicry is.
Basically, Biomimicry is learning from nature to help us make better, more eco-friendly, more reliable, sustainable, and generally awesome products. Nature has had 3.8 billion years of experience and R & D, and, in my opinion, is the universes Greatest Designer.

Some examples of Biomimicry are:

The Japanese bullet trains.
These trains were so fast that riding on them became unsafe as these went at the speed of sound. To  counter  this issue, designers changed the trains nose, so it was the shape of a woodpecker. This  aerodynamic shape  let the train run smoother.

Paper.
Apparently, the first paper was modeled on wasp's nests.

The aeroplane.
The Wright Brothers are the people who designed and built the first successful aeroplane. This plane             mimicked the way birds fly. Leonardo da Vinci is another famous Biomimetic who copied the way birds fly.

However, Biomimicry is not just about inserting natures genius into design. Other fields of Biomimicry include  medicine, computing, business, energy management and architecture.

So please give me a peer question if you haven't, and if you have any questions please just put it in the comment section!

I hope that helps!
