X Marks the Spot
Boys I have already mentioned a book I am currently reading - The History of the World in 100 Objects. It got me thinking about the mundane, 'run of the mill', potentially boring, uninspiring parts of the world and the VALUE that we place upon things. One object that the book outlines is a 6000 year-old jade axe head found in England. It is, after all, just a bit of rock (albeit with beautiful form, colour and shape) but scientists have traced the exact source of this rock to a boulder (yes, a single boulder) in Italy. That is extraordinary. It is also very valuable because it is so old, man-made, and gives us clues about how humans used to live. Which leads me to...this week's WNB topic: X Marks the Spot. I know I often miss (but so often try) to see beauty everywhere. When I am running in the hills, literally miles from anyone or anywhere I notice the small, the undiscovered, the seemingly unimportant and love that sense of discovery. What do you notice in this classroom when you really look hard? Do we run our lives so quickly that we forget to look, notice and appreciate? On another note: your thoughts on your camp last week? What surprised you? Did you appreciate someone better in a different environment? How tired are you?

I think this is a great WNB topic, because in today's world, people don't stop to notice the small things in life.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog, when I go running in Karori hills I also love the sense of discovery. Castlepoint camp was so much fun. One thing that suprised me is that I reckon that the Maitikona sand dunes were overrated. As soon as I got home from camp I was so tired I couldn't believe it I just wanted to sleep for days.
ReplyDeleteWhen I stop and reflect I notice so much that I didn't notice before, like some of the pictures on the wall and the things in the drawers under the smartboard. Camp was fun but I am a bit sick of the beach.
ReplyDeleteWhen I look around the classroom really hard I notice all the colour and old work, like a timeline of the work other boys have done, letters to the editor and such. I agree that life moves too quick so we should slow down and have a look around to see the wonders of the world. Camp was fun and I liked all the free time, although I never knew there was a cave under the lighthouse! I'm still tired though!!! :) As soon as I got back I had to finish my paper run and I'm regretting not getting enough sleep on Castlepoint!!
